Zigmahornets

I am planning to build a pair of these speakers and would like to know if there is any acoustic stuffing in the area above the speaker.  Has anyone built them with a standard flat top verses the  sloped top? Are there any modifications to the original design that improve the sound ?
Thank you

Re: Zigmahornets

There is no stuffing above the speaker.
In the original plan there is a bit behind the speaker.
GM (I think) once simulated it and he found that it was best to lightly stuff the box from behind the speaker to the ground. So that's what I did.
I used a flat top, sized in the middle of the original angular top.
I was my first project, and it was amusing. It does some things (e.g. acoustic music) well but really, it lacks bass. For me it could never be a universal speaker. I would rather recommend to build a speaker with a bigger FR unit, to enjoy better bass.

Re: Zigmahornets

I have built them too. I've put little stuffing only behind speaker. What I liked: easy to build, fun project, they look smart..and sexy. What I liked less? well.. Never got them to sound right with the drivers I have (Foster) and a bit better with Philips fullrangers, but it cruelly lacks bass, and is only suited for a small bedroom or office. I'd wish someone would come with a Zima on Steroids! that rock!

I've built my Zigmas with a detachable faceplates (front and back) that would eventually allow me to mod them to install 2 drivers at the front, and 2 at the back..

I didn't have the time to try it yet. But I will, one day. Too many projects right now. (Tannoy Autographs..)

I have built them with the original Merrill's speakers and to me they are very satisfying speakers.  I put them in the corner as seen here and to me, more than enough bass for my bedroom set.  Now the speakers are harder to get but they remain simple to build with a surprising bass with all the benefits of the FR driver.
